America Needs Modernized Chinooks

In 2017, the U.S. Army informed Congress that modernizing the CH-47F Chinook helicopter was a critical modernization priority.  Then, less than 24 months later, the Army abandoned support for the program. Without funding, the production line of this pivotal helicopter will shut down with no plans to replace this critical platform.

The Army made a commitment to American Soldiers that it would invest in a heavy-lift helicopter that can lift more, operate more effectively in high altitude/high humidity, and fly farther. The Army’s own analysis showed that the F Block II program would save them more than $3 Billion versus any other heavy-lift alternative.  The Chinook it remains the only helicopter that can meet the critical, heavy-lift needs of missions today and for years to come.

As you may know, the Army first developed the Chinook in the 1960s as a multi-mission heavy-lift helicopter to revolutionize troop, ammunition, and equipment transport. Since then, the Chinook has evolved with a digital cockpit, advanced air frame, and increased threat response systems. National Guard units, first responders, the U.S. military, and American allies depend on the Chinook to deliver heavy lift capability wherever called to do so.

The safety and effectiveness of our men and women in uniform is in jeopardy without a modernized Chinook. It would also impede humanitarian and natural disaster efforts, as well as civilian search and rescue missions.

The Department of Defense is facing serious funding challenges. While fiscal responsibility is essential for a strong and prosperous nation, straightforward discussions are necessary to ensure critical programs, such as the Chinook, remain a funding and modernization priority.

If the Chinook production line is forced to close its doors, the impact would be felt most by our troops – particularly those deployed overseas. The Chinook Block II’s increased heavy-lift capacity of more than 1,500 pounds allows it to deliver our troops into battle with a fully armored Joint Light Tactical Vehicle or M777 Extended Range Howitzer, critical war-fighting equipment. Its increased mobility and altitude capability enables pilots to fly with more agility, keeping Soldiers out of harm’s way.

The end of this storied helicopter would also mean the loss of 20,000 good-paying manufacturing jobs at more than 200 business in 38 states. America’s manufacturing base is still working its way out of the red as a result of the wide-sweeping economic devastation caused by COVID-19. The loss of the Chinook production line would be another consequential loss.

America’s military and manufacturing sector needs the modernized CH-47 Block II Chinook more than ever. Please act now to keep thousands of Americans working to deliver next-generation Chinook helicopters to U.S. Soldiers.
